Whipbird, by Robert Drewe

Cover of Whipbird, by Robert Drewe.

This is the tale of the large Cleary family’s 160th anniversary get together. Hugh Cleary’s newly acquired vineyard is the setting for this weekend event. Drewe uses this family gathering to comment on Australian society past and present. He uses humour with great effect in relating past historical events as well as in commenting on the large Cleary clan. This is an enlightening read, but I feel not as good as some of Drewe’s earlier novels.
