The Many Lies of Veronica Hawkins, by Kristina Pérez

Cover of The Many Lies of Veronica Hawkins, by Kristina Pérez.

Martina’s husband accepts a job in Hong Kong. The newly married couple decides to move there. Martina becomes the expat wife, no job, no friends in a vibrant and glamorous city. Then her luck changes. By chance she meets Veronica Hawkins, who is beautiful, sophisticated and very rich. Martina can’t believe her luck that Veronica becomes her best friend helping her find a new career, and most importantly a new self. But all is not as it seems.

I found the plot fascinating, but at times it did not seem quite authentic. However, it held my interest, and the plot took some amazing turns. As the author states: “who we want to be, who we convince ourselves we are, how we want to be perceived – especially the desire to control how we are classified by other people,” is at the heart of The Many Lies of Veronica Hawkins.
