Lady Tan’s Circle of Women, by Lisa See

A historical fiction novel set in 15th century China during the Ming Dynasty. This story is about Yunxian, a young girl from an elite family. Her mother passes away when she is only eight years old, and she is sent away to live with her grandparents. Yunxian is trained by her grandmother to be a medicine woman. She learns from a young age the customs and traditions for women in China in a male dominated world. She forms a true friendship with the midwife’s daughter, Meiling, and together they share in each other’s joys and sorrows. Yunxian defies the traditions of a male dominated world of medicine and learns valuable lessons along the way.

This book is beautifully written. There is so much history of ancient China written in this story. I found this story both captivating and fascinating as Yunxian attempts to break free from tradition and provide medicine for all women and girls from all classes of society.
