It is definitely a ‘cold’ book, set in the mountainous and remote area of Australia near Mt. Kosciusko.
The writer has given the narrator, Beth, a 14-year-old girl, poor grammar consistently throughout the book. As Beth deals with the loss of a brother in the mountains, the rest of the family, especially the mother, is either coping or not coping with anxiety overload. The book ends on a lighter note with winter ending, the trees budding, and Beth living more peacefully with her memories of Sam.
There is a lot of repetition, but I liked it. Matthew Hooper is a writer and reader of creative writing.
