Earth is the second of Boyne’s element series after Water. Read the review of Water.
It traces the story of one of the characters in Water, Evan Keogh, who reluctantly became a football star in London. There are very graphic scenes of violent sex between our gay protagonist and the men hired by his pimp. Interspersed with these chapters are the descriptions of the court proceedings where Evan is accused of being an accessory to a rape.
There are lots of coincidences and unexpected twists to the plot which redeemed this novel for me. John Boyne is one of my favourite Irish writers.
