The Alternatives, by Caoilinn Hughes

Cover of The Alternatives, by Caoilinn Hughes.

This is the third novel I have read by this Irish author – a novel about sisterhood.

Four brilliant sisters, orphaned in childhood when their parents died in a tragic accident. All single, they live distant lives until one day the oldest sibling abruptly vanishes from work and home. In a show of unity, the sisters descend on the Irish countryside to find the sister who didn’t want to be found. Together for the first time in years, old wounds resurface, and differences emerge.

This is a very clever book about relationships and the unknowability of people, set against a background of a looming climate crisis.
