His first work in Busselton was driving a taxi then working as a tally clerk on the Busselton jetty before joining the PWD [Public Works Department] in 1926.
In 1932 he was put in charge of the maintenance for the Busselton Drainage area. He talks of contour levels in the district, construction of the Vasse Diversion Drain, maintenance of the Busselton Jetty, erosion, construction of groynes and drainage rates for farmers.
He was a member of the Busselton Fire Brigade for ten years and served on the Sussex Roads Board. He played football for Pastimes Football Club.
In 1967 he retired. Shortly after he was asked to go to Carnarvon to make recommendations on the Gascoyne River for protection from erosion. The next year he went to Kununurra after floods, to make an inspection of and give a property report on damage and make recommendations on improvements that that may have been necessary.
He returned to Busselton and did some further work for the Busselton Shire Council.
He met Busselton girl Elsie Winifred Biggs and they married at St Mary’s Anglican Church on 28 April 1937. They had two children Edwina May and Alan James and four grandchildren Adam and Jasmine Rudy, Jacqueline and Rebecca Carmichael.
Ted died 18 January 1986 aged 83 years after a short illness.
